David McKee (1935 – 2022)
David McKee’s first picture book, Two Can Toucan, was published in 1964. Many years and many books later, in 2020 he was awarded the prestigious BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award.
Over the years, David enjoyed a successful career as a fine artist and children’s book creator responsible for family favourites such as Not Now, Bernard, Mr Benn and Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.
Elmer, the first story featuring the patchwork elephant published by Andersen Press in 1989, promotes inclusivity and friendship, themes that have since resonated with millions of children around the world. David went on to write and illustrate a total of 30 Elmer picture books, with more novelty titles too, and a successful licensing programme which sees Elmer appear on clothing, on the stage, in games and puzzles and much, much more.
David’s messages of compassion and friendship will continue to live on for many more generations through his joyful, heartfelt stories.
